Research into historical documentation of the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder has been a hobby (my husband would call it a "passion") of mine for many years. While doing genealogical research on my own family at the National Archives, I was unexpectedly led to an 1880 Federal Census page from the Dakota Territory (later to become North and South Dakota) and was startled to find the family of Charles and Caroline Ingalls among the names listed before me.
Up to that time, I had not read Laura's books and rarely watched TV's "Little House on the Prairie." Until this historical "revelation," I had not realized that the Ingalls were real people. My intrigue with this fact took me back to my local library where I consumed all nine of Laura's juvenile "fiction" in short order. Inspired by her clear portrait of pioneer life, I began looking for biographical information about the author of these captivating stories of American history. Unlike today - when there are literally dozens of biographies about Laura Ingalls Wilder - very little information was available at that time. So, I decided to start my search for facts about the Ingalls and Wilder families in the documents that had "gotten me hooked" in the first place - census records.
Upon inspection of the census pages, I suddenly realized that there were several discrepancies between data found there and what Laura had written in her books. For example: The 1880 census gave Carrie's birthplace as Kansas, but she appears as "baby Carrie" in Laura's first book, "Little House in the Big Woods," which is set in Wisconsin and takes place *before* the Ingalls moved to Kansas (the setting of Laura's third book, "Little House on the Prairie"). Similarly, the 1860 census for Malone, New York, (when Almanzo was only a year old) mentions a "Laura A. Wilder - age 16. There was no mention of a *sister* named Laura in "Farmer Boy" - Laura Ingalls Wilder's biography of a year of her husband's life as a child in upstate New York.
As I began to read the stream of new books about Laura that continued to appear in my book catalogs, I realized that my census research revealed some things about which no one has yet written. For examples: In the 1860 census, taken six months after Charles and Caroline's Feb 1 marriage, Caroline was listed as one of 12 individuals in the "Lansford Ingles" household. Caroline was not listed with Charles or as being married.
No writer has yet mentioned the presence of Rose Wilder Lane in the 1910 census (taken 16 Apr) of Wright County, Missouri, with Almanzo and Laura. It is now known that Rose, who had been married the previous year in San Francisco, lost a baby son about 1910. Rose was not listed in the census by her married name, even though for 50 years after her 1918 divorce, she continued to use the name Rose Wilder Lane. Certainly there could be speculation about the timing of her visit with her parents at Rocky Ridge Farm and the birth of her baby. There are many mysteries still waiting to be solved!
With the question always before me, "Why would Laura change historical information?", I began writing to Little House museums and sending for additional information. I learned about The Ingalls' year (Fall 1876 - Fall 1877) in Burr Oak, Iowa, which although was not "frozen in time" with a census page as stays in Wisconsin, Kansas and the Dakota Territory had been, was never-the-less alluded to under the birthplace column next to Grace's name. There are *no* such hints about the Ingalls family's approximate 15 month stay in Chariton County, Missouri, (1868-1869) on the way to Kansas. (My thanks to *other* researchers for ferreting out this and much other information.)
What follows - as with all genealogy - is nowhere near complete. Many books and other genealogical sources - often with conflicting information - were consulted. Please accept my apologies if I chose an incorrect source! I welcome those of you with family surnames mentioned below to contact me if you have additional names or updated information. You are welcome to "use" the information on this page as long as you: 1) give me credit and 2) realize that there are undoubtedly some inaccuracies. (This is my "disclaimer")

PLEASE NOTE: Although there are many new ways of displaying family relationships using computer programs and internet links, *my* favorite method is still as a large single chart. Unfortunately, this type of wide overview is not feasible for viewing on a computer monitor. Here, I have tried to group names to make the family relationships easier to "visualize." Using such a "family tree" has helped me understand who individual characters were as Laura introduced them into her books. When an event place is given, I usually only provide the county - not the city where the event took place. Researchers will recognize that I did this because most birth, death and marriage records are archived in county government offices.
My special thanks to Rebecca Irby, Mike Butterfield, Beth Ingalls, Jaqueline Ingalls, David Fleming, and Br. Aaron Raverty for providing additional names and/or dates to those I already had. (Updated 3 Aug 1999)

Census & Other Sources
Federal Census Pages
When available and legible, I have included National Archives Publication #, Microfilm Roll#, Enumeration District #, Page # and Line #.
These are included should you wish to order copies of these original documents. The name shown is the head of the family. Please note that spellings are copied as shown on census documents. To obtain census records, email your Postal Mailing Address, the form number (#82) and specify how many request forms you need (one for each census record) to the NNU Public Reference Inquire at inquire@arch2.nara.gov. You must have this form before ordering any records. The cost is $6/record. If you live anywhere near any of the National Archive Branches, I highly recommend doing your own research. It's not only a lot cheaper, but lots of fun as well!
